Studying Sandstone

I was nervous I wasn't going to make anything beautiful today. But then I realized that I need to just go with the flow in what is fascinating me in the moment. Today the fascination was the flow of the sandstone. Once I let go of the overwhelming landscape that was intimidating me into not picking up my pencil, I sat down for about an hour in each spot studying the erosion lines on the rocks. Though my fingers were cold, the sun was warm on my back.

Drawing was easy again. I noticed that the sandstone erosion lines are free to be carved by the wind. They were flowing in all directions and came alive when I paid them attention. I don't think I was quite successful in capturing the movement, or life, but I'm thankful to have allowed myself the practice because I see that I need to create more depth via line weight and shading. I hope to find myself wondering around the desert again soon.
